Software apps and online services
Every day I go through a ritual of "okay did I remember to bring X, Y, and Z and do P, Q, and R?" before I leave the house. Sometimes I forget a step because it's 6 in the morning and I am not a morning person. So I thought, hey, I've been meaning to learn how to make an Alexa Skill for ages and this seems like a simple enough thing, so why don't I go and actually make this into a skill?
So that's why Remember Your Keys is a thing now. I made it as a way for me to learn how to make an Alexa Skill, and I hope that my experience can be helpful to other newbies.
How It Works
This is a really simple Alexa Skill. It contains a list of questions stored in an array and Alexa asks them one by one. If you say "yes", then Alexa moves on to the next one. If you say "no", then Alexa tells you to go fix that and then closes the session. If Alexa runs out of questions to ask, she tells you that you're ready to go and wishes you well.
It's based on the Amazon Color Picker template, so you can see some similarities of variable names and such with other skills based on it. :)
The questions are all written into the code itself. I tried making it as broadly applicable as possible but most other people probably want a different list than mine. But still, most other people may want a different checklist than the one I use, so I tried to make the code easy to customize so even people who aren't super experienced can make their own checklist skills using it.
I mean, I guess I could have a thing where it hooks into your account on a web app where you have a custom checklist? Maybe it can read the first checklist off a specific card in Trello or something? But I don't have the skill, time, nor resources to do that at this point.
Also I can see Alexa Skills that remind you whether you've taken all your meds for the day or followed all the steps necessary before sending off something to the printer being very useful things. So, if you want to make your own checklist skill and find this helpful, please feel free to grab the code and use it!
The Skill Itself
It has passed certification! Now you can give it a try!
To enable Remember Your Keys on your Echo (Dot), go into your Alexa app, select skills on the left, and then search for Remember Your Keys. Enjoy!
